Men's Ministry

May 2008

Christians suffer temptation from three potential sources: the world, the flesh, and the devil. So writes beloved pastor and theologian Adrian Rogers in his most excellent book, What Every Christian Ought to Know.

Rogers refers to the world as “The External Foe.” Think of the world as the non-Christian way of thinking and behaving. The world, from a biblical view, describes the human system of thought and behavior that opposes God’s sovereignty.

The world’s attack targets the soul, which includes a person’s mind, will, and emotion. Worldly temptations tend to concentrate on one’s pride and ego—temptations to be popular or powerful—temptations to draw attention to “me.”

Faith is the scriptural response to the world. The Bible encourages Christians, “This is love for God: to obey His commands. And His commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he that believes that Jesus is the Son of God” (1 John 5:3-5).

In Christ,
Brother Jeff
